Now is a true story for the most part
That occurred on the top of this
Bigwig record executive's in Nashville, Tennessee
Now understand I'm not poking any fun or anybody
God knows I country music with all my heart and soul
And I the Grand Ole Opry
But I do have a problem someone who
Can't play a D chord on a guitar
Telling with a dream that they won't get far
So this song is dedicated to all those underdogs me
Out there running
Don't get discouraged if you have a
Don't be afraid to chase it
It's how it

He said, "Son, don't get offended by I'm about to say
I can see you have a
For the you write and play
But you lack what we all call appeal
And you just don't have what it
To make it in Nashville"

Well my felt like a train wreck
But I a smile on my face
I said, "Thank you for time, sir"
Put my guitar back in its
Our conversation was like a revelation
Redirecting my
'Cause God knows I'd never my soul to rock 'n' roll
Or rap or wear those tight skinny

'Cause you I'd rather sing my own songs
Than be a puppet on a
wear what I want to wear
I'm gonna sing what I wanna
Heaven all I need
Is my faith, my fans, my friends and my
Besides I'd be an old fence post in Texas
the king of Tennessee

So I up my old pickup truck
And I back home to Amarillo
Got a gig off old 66
At this ballroom The Armadillo
And for the first shows or so
Not a showed up
I thought about quitting every day
But I just kept on kicking cup

Yeah, I kept kicking can surrounded by
Blood, sweat, and
And wouldn't you know I became an sensation
In just over ten
And now I'm out all the dance halls
And the every night
I got a wife, a ranch, a band, a bus, a boat
I'd say I'm alright

And you know I'd rather my own songs
be a puppet on a string
I'll what I want to wear
I'm gonna sing what I wanna
Heaven knows all I
Is my faith, my fans, my friends and my
Besides I'd rather be an old post in Texas
the king of Tennessee

Oh, how 'bout a front porch picking, boys

Well, wouldn't you know old record man
Showed up one night at honky tonking bar
my show he said,
"Son, I you might be the next big country star"
He said, "We how you keep it raw
We like how you keeping it
And I think you may have what
We all to call commercial appeal"
Huh, that something
Well, sir

I'd rather my own songs
Than be a puppet on a
I'll wear what I to wear
And I'm sing what I wanna sing
knows all I need
Is my faith, my fans, my friends and my
Besides I'd rather be an old post in Texas
Than the of Tennessee
God bless
But I'd rather be just an old fence post in
Than sell my soul to rock 'n'
Or rap or wear those tight jeans
